Business areas
The majority of apprenticeships at Atlassian Williams Racing are within our Operations or Technical departments. Over 3 and a half years, you'll gain invaluable knowledge of processes, learn how to work in a team and develop your skills. It's important to understand the differences in the apprenticeships we offer to understand which is for you. Example roles include composites, machining, model shop, assembly and test, pattern shop, electronics and inspection.
On The Job Training
Apprenticeships offer an opportunity to blend training and structured learning with practical work experience. As an apprentice, you can earn a wage, while gaining valuable skills and knowledge. Depending upon the role and department, you can study at level 3 or 4 - the equivalent to A-levels and the first year of an undergraduate degree (or HNC). We work with local providers to ensure you can balance your work and study, gaining nationally recognised qualifications.
Apprentice Community
Being part of the apprenticeship community is one of the best parts of joining Atlassian Williams Racing. For many, it's a first job upon finishing school and some students will re-locate, just like university! As a tight knit group, you'll spend time training together and learning from one another. It's not all work though, our apprentices enjoy pizza nights, go karting and other social events throughout the year.

FAQs
I WOULD LIKE A CAREER WITHIN THE MOTORSPORT INDUSTRY - HOW CAN I ACHIEVE THIS?
For engineering-based roles within F1, there are two traditional routes that you can choose to take. The baseline for each of these routes is good grades at A-level or the equivalent. This includes maths and sciences, as well as design and technology or mechanics if you have such options. This solid foundation will provide you with the opportunity to go on to pursue an apprenticeship or attend university.
At Williams Racing, the majority of our apprenticeships are at level 3; therefore, if you have already achieved a Level 3 or above in engineering or a similar motorsport subject, you will be unable to apply. Please check this with your recruiter once you apply. That doesn’t mean you can never work at Williams—there are lots of other routes, and doing an apprenticeship elsewhere, building up your experience, and then starting your career at Williams later is also a route that many take.
I WOULD LIKE A CAREER WITHIN THE MOTORSPORT INDUSTRY - WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT AREAS?
There are a variety of different routes to find a career in Motorsports. You could work in design, hospitality, events, technology and there are a variety of skills that could be transferable. For example, as a motorsport engineer, you could work in either design, testing, production, or racing. Your duties in the first three areas would include:
- Assessing new ideas by looking at performance, strength, costs, and safety.
- Designing prototypes with computer-aided design (CAD) software.
- Testing components and bodywork to increase a vehicle's performance.
- Building production models and carrying out quality control checks.
At race meetings, your duties would include:
- Setting up the cars to suit track and weather conditions.
- Monitoring engine speed and other data during races.
- Fine-tuning the car and sending technical instructions to the driver.
- Carrying out ‘after-tests’ on the cars after races to look for signs of damage.
I AM A GCSE STUDENT AND WOULD LIKE ADVICE ON THE BEST ROUTE TO SUPPORT A CAREER IN MOTORSPORT
We advise you to always give your best at school, whichever career path you choose. Studying STEM (science, technology, engineering, maths) is a good idea. If you would like to become an engineer, you can explore different university courses such as Mechanical, Automotive, or Aeronautical disciplines or join us for an apprenticeship.
Certain universities have strong motorsport-related courses such as Cambridge, Imperial, Brunel, Bristol, Loughborough, and Southampton. Consider gaining extracurricular experience, such as supporting a Formula Student team, working in a garage, or voluntary work with a junior race team.
WOULD THE APPRENTICESHIP OR UNIVERSITY ROUTE SUIT ME?
For those that are more practically minded, an apprenticeship is a great alternative to university. You can learn and earn at the same time, which is a benefit for many students.
If you're unsure about working straight away in motorsport, consider taking part in initiatives such as STEM Racing and Formula Student, gain relevant work experience, a part-time job, or related hobbies such as mechanics or karting. Demonstrating determination and passion for motorsport in your CV will increase your chances of securing an apprenticeship with us.
CAN I DO WORK EXPERIENCE AT WILLIAMS RACING?
Our work experience programme is aimed at year 10-13 students (ages 14-18), providing a unique view of how an F1 team operates. The programme helps students understand various jobs and career pathways in F1.
You do not need to be a UK resident; however, you must fund your own travel and accommodation. Work experience is only available through our set programme and dates.
