A behind-the-scenes look at F1 project leader jobs

F1 project leader

Every upgrade on the car starts with a bright idea. At Atlassian Williams F1 Team, F1 project leaders are the people who turn those ideas into tested, race-ready parts. They collaborate across departments and organise teams to create our winning formula.

Here’s a closer look at how our F1 project leader jobs fuel our improvements on and off track and how you can find your place in this exciting role.

What does an F1 project leader do?

Our project leaders shape some of the most important engineering work happening inside the factory. They bring direction to complex development programmes, align teams, and make sure that every idea is informed by data and insight.

Every improvement on the car, big or small, passes through a structured development loop. Sortoros Androlakis, Aerodynamics Project Leader, describes what that looks like in his team:

“I spend my days designing external surfaces for the car that make the air go more efficiently around it, as well as leading teams that collaborate together to create those surfaces. All of this has the goal of increasing downforce, reducing drag and putting more performance on the car.”

“I love my job and the challenges it gives me. It’s a really unique working environment, one where everyone is pulling together, doing their best, working long hours but we do it as a team. Teamwork and resilience are behaviours I see every day. I actually can’t imagine a better place to work.”

Skills needed for Formula 1 project leader jobs

Project leader jobs in F1 combine technical understanding with people-focused skills. A grounding in engineering, aerodynamics or programme management helps you understand the work, but the role often comes down to how well you communicate and how comfortable you are coordinating with different teams

Gabriele Gaggini, Aerodynamics Project Leader, explains:

“It’s a team sport and it’s important that you can collaborate, be open to ideas, and be willing to grow together with the people you work with.”

How to become an F1 project leader

People take different routes into Formula 1, but most combine a strong technical background with relevant experience. Many project leaders begin in graduate or early careers roles, building experience through hands-on design or analysis before moving into leadership.

A typical route involves building early careers experience in design, analysis or operations before moving into more coordination-focused roles. Skills in CAD, CFD or project delivery frameworks can help, as can exposure to manufacturing processes and how parts move through the development pipeline.

These elements often help candidates stand out:

  • Experience planning and structuring technical work
  • Understanding of engineering fundamentals
  • Ability to communicate clearly across teams
  • Interest in continuous improvement
  • A habit of asking questions and seeking information

Above all, staying focussed on the end goal is key, as Gabriele shared:

“Don’t give up if things aren’t going to plan straight away. Keep pursuing your passion.”

Why build your project leader career at Atlassian Williams F1 Team?

Project leaders join (or stay at!) Williams for different reasons. For some, it’s the incredible team culture, which sees people learn, grow, and develop quickly in line with our movement up the grid. For others, it’s the opportunity to work in an environment that’s operating right at the cutting edge, with new tools, technology and ways of working.

As Gabriele puts it:

“What makes Williams special is a combination of the people and the fact that we work with such high-end tools and technologies that you won’t find elsewhere. It’s a unique environment. I aspire to keep learning and growing both personally and technically, and Williams is the perfect place to achieve this.”
