Our formula for success: The high performance Values & Behaviours framework that drives us forward

At Atlassian Williams F1 Team, our high-performance Values & Behaviours framework is an essential part of how we create our winning formula. As we rebuild and climb back up the grid, innovation, teamwork, resilience, excellence and accountability shape how we work on and off the track, from the way we solve problems to the way we support each other under pressure.

Why Values & Behaviours matter to our mission

Building a winning team takes more than technical skill alone. It takes people who seek information properly, work openly with others, keep going when things get difficult, and take ownership when it counts. That’s how our performance builds over time, and how we move forward together.

Our high-performance Values & Behaviours framework in action

Innovation: Harness new ideas, new business processes, and new technology

Innovation is about building creative, exciting ideas which help us drive real performance on and off track.

Those ideas don’t come out of nowhere. At Williams, it starts with seeking information, sharing knowledge, and being open to fresh thinking. It also means thinking flexibly, especially when plans change or new information comes to light.

As Mike Mottram, Leadership Development Lead, adds:

“At Williams, innovation is as much about solving problems by understanding root causes as it is about new ideas.”

That way of working can be seen throughout our organisation. Innovation can come from a graduate with a new perspective, from a technical specialist finding a smarter process, or from a team reworking how they collaborate to improve the end result. It’s part of how we shape the future, and it’s one of the clearest ways people can make an impact early in their career.

Anna Birks, Early Careers Development Lead, captures that sense of possibility:

“The value I love most is innovation. Our Early Careers population come up with really creative ideas which ultimately improve the car and our lap times. I think it’s a really exciting space, and I always like to push the boundaries and challenge what we can do.”

Joshua Roberts, Aerodynamics Software Engineer, sees innovation as the key to achieving our on-track objectives:

“All our values are critical to developing a Formula 1 car, but innovation and new ideas are what will separate us from the competition.”

Teamwork: We are one - we win or lose as a team

Every podium place or tenth of a second shaved off a lap time is a team effort. Success only comes when people share what they know early, stay open under pressure and make decisions with the wider team in mind.

Teamwork at Williams is grounded in our behaviours. Connecting with empathy helps people listen, respect different perspectives, and create the kind of environment where ideas can flow and everyone has an equal opportunity to use their voice. Collaborating with purpose keeps work from drifting into silos and helps the right people come together when it matters most.

As Ben Knights, Operations Performance Analyst, shares:

“Of our values, ‘teamwork’ is the one that resonates the most to me. It’s all about creating that team philosophy of ‘we're going to get through this and we're going to work all together.’”

Julien Davies, Modelshop Metrology Lead, sess teamwork as essential when the pressure is on:

“I see teamwork in everyone coming together to get over a problem from all different departments. We’re all bound by that one goal of getting to the track and being the best we possibly can. It’s a special environment to work in.”

Resilience: Fostering good practices to drive excellence through challenge

No Formula 1 season runs without bumps in the road. At Williams, resilience is about how people respond in those moments where the plan goes out the window. We show resilience in how we react and keep moving, even when the plans change and pressure climbs.

Resilience isn’t just an idea though; it’s a set of actions that we can take together to build trust and create clear expectations. For example, we know that communicating clearly and building confidence is essential helps build trust and guarantee resilience.

Excellence: Building skills, playing to our strengths and raising the bar

Excellence matters because in every part of the team, there’s always room to sharpen and refine. That’s why striving to improve is such an important behaviour. We maintain our standards when the pressure's on and don’t accept outcomes that we know aren’t at the right level.

Developing self and others matters just as much. High performance gets stronger when people keep learning, share knowledge openly, and help raise the level around them. Improvement is part of the culture here, and that plays a role in every area of the business.

Luke Timmins, Director of Merchandise and Licensing, explains why that mindset matters well beyond the track:

“Excellence is fundamental. The nature of the sport is high performance, and I think if we apply that mentality to all business areas, we can always do better. We can always strive to improve, and we can always benchmark ourselves against the best in the world, whether that be in Formula 1 or another sport. I think that striving for continuous improvement means we never stagnate.”

Accountability: Owning our own and collective outcomes - good or bad

Accountability is what keeps a high-performance team moving. Clear ownership helps people act decisively and avoid the roadblocks that cost performance.

It also means being open when something has not landed as it should. Driving action and change is about being honest, learning quickly, and improving. Customer focus matters here too, whether the person relying on your work is a fan, a partner or the next team in the process.

Chris Ison sees this value in his team:

“The value I resonate the most with is accountability. I think it's really important within an organisation that it's really clear who is responsible for doing what and when they commit to do that, getting it done, as otherwise the organisation goes nowhere.”

Juan Molina, Chief Aerodynamicist, gives an example of what accountability looks like in practice:

“I saw the value of accountability in action in a previous race. There were some issues with communication, which a trackside member of the team took on board. In the debrief, there were no fingers pointed, and the team member laid out the things that he did wrong and would be working on. I found it very powerful and inspiring. It shows that we own and learn from the things we get wrong. That’s how we solve problems.”
