How the heritage team keeps our history alive

A Williams F1 car on the track

At Atlassian Williams Racing, our heritage continues to inspire our ambition to get back to the front of the grid and win multiple World Championships again. The innovation and creativity behind every championship-winning car deserves to be celebrated, and through our F1 heritage jobs, that legacy is carefully curated and brought back to life.

Day to day, our Heritage team safeguards nearly 50 years of racing history while helping to shape the future of the team. From restoration and preservation to global events and partner experiences, these are heritage jobs in Formula 1 with real impact.

What heritage jobs in Formula 1 look like at Atlassian Williams Racing

Working in heritage at Atlassian Williams Racing means being trusted with cars that represent entire eras of the sport. Since its formation in 2014, the team has been responsible for the care, operation, and presentation of some of Williams’ most iconic Formula 1 cars.

Heritage also connects directly to people beyond the team. The cars in our collection are used to inspire future engineers through education and STEM activity, as well as engaging fans and partners around the world.

Jim Barker, Heritage and Legacy Specialist, explains why this work matters:

“The heritage collection is a wonderful celebration of our cars from the past leading up towards our present. I believe it’s truly important to maintain our legacy and heritage. We see the reaction that these cars generate with our fans when we do dynamic activations with them at festivals and other events.”

“We also generate huge amounts of revenue and look after these cars all over the world. We handle the service and restoration, continual maintenance of them, but also find cars that have been lying dormant for up to 30, 40 years, finding original engine suppliers for them, and turning them back into running cars.”

The impact of heritage engineering jobs

Heritage engineering jobs are highly skilled, detail-oriented roles with unique challenges. With aging materials and suppliers that no longer exist, engineers must find creative solutions when it comes to developing and refining the cars to return to track.

That’s why the Williams technical archive is so critical. Original drawings, handwritten engineer notes, setup sheets, and calculations are actively used to understand how each car was designed and how it should behave today.

Jim gave an example of this process in action:

“We recently built an FW11 from 1986. None of us had worked on one of these cars before, but because we keep all the original drawings, design information and engineer notes, we have everything for all of our cars over nearly a 50-year range.

“We look at our archive, we dig into the information we’ve had, and, using the skill we have in the heritage workshop, we can get these cars back into service life again.”

Bringing iconic cars back to the track

One of the defining features of Formula 1 heritage jobs at Atlassian Williams Racing is that many of our cars are run. Through dynamic demonstrations, today’s fans are able to see and hear historic cars operating exactly as they were designed to.

For many people, it’s their first close-up experience of a different era of Formula 1. The team’s work plays a big role in shaping how that history is remembered. As Jim puts it:

“The static museum pieces are wonderful, I never tire of looking at them, but being able to run them on track as dynamic display pieces and have people experience those screaming V10s and V8s from a bygone era truly has a significant impact.”

“The response we get from it is outstanding. We’re celebrating one of the most successful teams in the 75-year history of Formula 1 and I believe it’s very important.”

How heritage jobs in F1 support partners and events

Heritage also plays a key role in how we engage with partners, guests, and the engineers of tomorrow. Through demonstrations and visits to the Experience Centre, the Heritage team helps create meaningful connections with the team’s story.

Tom Iverson, Senior Experience Centre Manager, focuses on delivering those experiences in a way that’s both authentic and memorable:

“The role involves looking after a lot of our commercial partners. We’re lucky enough to have one of the largest collections of privately-owned Formula 1 cars across the globe and we’re very keen to showcase that to the public.”

Tom’s role bridges Williams’ past and present, using the Heritage programme to give guests a deeper understanding of the team. From garage tours to events involving senior leadership and drivers, these moments help people connect with the story behind the cars.

Williams has one of the largest histories up and down the grid and we love to share that with clients. We also have an amazing heritage division that will share stories of the heyday in the 90s, so it always helps to be able to share stories from back in the day and then resonate with where we’re going with Williams today.”
