At Atlassian Williams Racing, we’re committed to building the next generation of motorsport talent. That’s why we launched the Komatsu - Williams Engineering Academy – a unique early careers initiative designed to identify, mentor, and support the brightest aspiring engineers from around the world. Developed in partnership with Komatsu, a global leader in engineering excellence, the programme offers students access to mentoring, technical development, and real-world experience within the fast-paced world of Formula 1.
One of our current academy students, Aran, recently visited Williams HQ in Grove. We caught up with him to reflect on his journey so far – from discovering his love of motorsport to stepping inside an F1 team for the very first time.
What inspired you to apply for the Komatsu - Williams Engineering Academy?
I discovered my passion for cars in 2023 and soon after began diving deeper into the world of motorsport. As I researched more about racing, particularly Formula 1, I realised how competitive and difficult it is to break into. So, when I came across the Komatsu - Williams Engineering Academy through STEM Racing (previously F1 in Schools), I didn’t hesitate. The opportunity to connect with a real F1 team at such a young age was incredibly exciting, and I knew that being selected could be a game-changer for my future.
What has been the most exciting or unexpected part of your experience so far?
Without a doubt, being invited to the Williams factory. Gaining behind the scenes access is incredible. Spending a week at Williams’ headquarters in Grove exceeded all my expectations. I got a real glimpse into how an F1 team operates – from the specialist equipment to the incredible expertise of the staff. I even discovered new career paths that sparked my interest, like Race Engineering. Getting to ask questions directly to professionals working in the sport was a truly unique and inspiring experience.
How has the mentorship and support shaped your development?
The mentorship has been a massive help. Having regular online meetings where I can ask career-related, and engineering questions has really improved my understanding of the motorsport industry and what it takes to succeed. I’ve built a friendly and open relationship with my mentor – I can email a question whenever it pops into my head and get a helpful response within hours. It’s also great to bond over our shared passion for motorsport. That kind of personal connection and support really sets this programme apart.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of applying?
This is one of the best early careers opportunities in F1 – if not the best. The chance to grow with the team is something that will be invaluable in the future. My biggest advice? Be yourself at the assessment centre. The team wants to see how you think, solve problems, and collaborate. Step up to lead when the moment’s right, listen to others, and show your strengths. Come in with confidence and a positive mindset, and make sure they see why you’re the best choice for the academy.
We’re shaping the future of motorsport through programmes like the Komatsu - Williams Engineering Academy - developing the next generation of passionate, talented individuals who will help create our winning formula. Applications are now open for our 2026 cohort, delivered in partnership with STEM Racing. Discover more on our Komatsu Williams Engineering Academy webpage.
