What does it take to move an F1 team from race to race?

Behind every race weekend is a carefully planned logistics operation making sure everyone has what they need, when they need it. Working in F1 logistics means keeping plans on course and finding solutions when circumstances change.

At Atlassian Williams F1 Team, Nicole Mather helps keep the team moving as Race Team Logistics Coordinator. From looking after sea freight equipment to developing a digital inventory, she’s finding ways to keep everyone in place and ready to perform.

Here, Nicole shares what F1 logistics jobs involve and how she’s found her place in the race team.

How F1 logistics keeps race preparations moving

Moving Formula 1 teams around the world involves coordinating sea, air and road freight. Sea freight equipment can follow different routes from the race calendar, with multiple sets travelling ahead to support future events. Keeping those preparations on track takes careful coordination.

Nicole’s responsibility is the race team’s sea freight equipment, including its maintenance and servicing. That covers pit equipment and consumables, right down to the bolts colleagues need. On a race weekend, she could be working trackside or supporting people in different locations:

“If I’m at a race, I will either be there as a garage technician or filling in for the race logistics manager. If I’m not at a race, I am supporting the team in any capacity I can, and that involves the team that is at the race or the team who’s setting up the next race, because those preparations overlap.”

The equipment has to be ready for the people relying on it. Knowing what colleagues need, and taking responsibility for getting it sorted, is how logistics makes real impact.

What skills do F1 logistics jobs need?

Organisation is key when several schedules need your attention at once. You need to know what’s due and recognise when a change impacts someone else’s work. For Nicole, time management is essential, along with confidence using Microsoft tools and a willingness to tackle problems.

Working at this pace also requires interpersonal skills. You need to be comfortable asking questions and adapting when the day takes an unexpected turn. Nicole shares how she enjoys that variety:

“It’s exciting. Every day is different. I’ve never had a day that is repeated, so I never know what to expect, which is good because I enjoy that, but it’s also nerve-racking. I’ve loved it and I hope to continue loving it. I love being challenged, and that’s what I’ve been getting from the role.”

Her team’s favourite phrase is “Keep going.” In a logistics role, that determination means staying constructive when something needs fixing and focusing on what you can do next. Clear updates help everyone respond with confidence.

Improving F1 sea freight with digital inventory

Nicole shares how she is particularly enthusiastic about a project to move the sea freight inventory onto an Atlassian tool.

It’s a practical example of how our partnership with Atlassian supports better teamwork through technology. Nicole sees an opportunity to simplify equipment checks and make information easier to share between trackside colleagues and the team back home:

“We’ll have more time to actually work on the equipment, and simply getting kits out the door will be faster. It’ll be easier for the guys to do."

This is innovation used with a clear purpose of improving a familiar task so the people doing it can spend more time on the equipment itself.

Finding a route into motorsport logistics careers

Nicole’s route into logistics began with an honours degree in psychology. After university, she joined a contractor working alongside Williams at events. That experience led her to apply for a role within the team.

Her first position was Event Support Technician in hospitality, where she worked with sea freight hospitality equipment. After around a year and a half, she moved into race team logistics. She then knew which direction she wanted to take:

“I wanted to be challenged more. I wanted to be on the race team side. I enjoy the pit equipment and all of that, so when the job opened and I applied for it, it was a great opportunity.”

For anyone exploring motorsport logistics careers, Nicole’s journey is an example of how practical experience can help you discover where you want to develop further.

Our internal career growth opportunities show how you can build that experience across the team and find your place.

Building confidence in the F1 race team

Nicole expected to need all the answers when she arrived. What she found was colleagues willing to explain and help her learn. That support gave her room to build confidence as she took on new responsibilities.

Being trusted to stretch herself has brought memorable opportunities, including acting as a traffic spotter during pit stops at Zandvoort while covering for the Race Team Logistics Manager. It was a new challenge she found both nerve-racking and exciting.

The willingness of colleagues to share their knowledge has stayed with her:

“When I first started, everyone gave me a helping hand. Everyone wanted to teach me, show me the ways, and give me their insight. There’s a lot of knowledge in this company, and I think everyone wanted to share it, which was great. I was very fortunate to get that.”

That’s how we help each other unleash potential. With opportunities to develop skills and have trust placed in you from day one, Williams is an exciting place to learn and grow.
