What does an F1 Principal Engineer do?

At Atlassian Williams F1 Team, principal engineers help create the winning formula by guiding teams and turning collective effort into lap time. If you're exploring F1 principal engineer jobs or wondering what the role actually involves, here’s what it looks like inside an iconic Formula 1 team.

What is an F1 principal engineer?

A principal engineer is responsible for elevating both technical output and the way people work. Every engineer in Formula 1 contributes something important to the car, but principal engineers help our teams stay aligned, focused, and clear on what will add performance.

Adam Sweetman, Principal Engineer for Organisational Performance, supports many of the technical teams behind the car.

“In my role, I align strategies, behaviours and processes across as many technical teams as possible to give us a singular direction to push towards. What I do helps the car go faster as I help to guide key team members to maximise the time they spend adding performance. It’s all about working smarter, not just harder.”

In a sport where requirements shift quickly, principal engineers cut through the chaos. They help teams navigate busy development cycles and ensure important conversations happen at the right time. Adam has seen that pace up close:

“My time at Williams has been fast-paced. The team has changed rapidly, so what I walked into in 2022 is very different from where we are now. You’ve got to be able to adapt with that, and it’s been wonderful to be in an organisation where change isn’t just something that gets talked about.”

Key responsibilities in F1 principal engineer jobs

Principal engineering jobs vary across areas such as composites, transmissions, vehicle technology and organisational performance. But the core expectations of taking ownership, supporting your team, and delivering work that helps the car go faster run through each area of the team.

Across our engineering teams, principal engineers typically:

  • Own major systems or projects from concept through to delivery
  • Solve complex design and performance challenges
  • Mentor engineers at different stages of their careers
  • Keep teams aligned on priorities, strategy and timing
  • Build relationships across manufacturing, testing and trackside teams
  • Make big decisions when time is tight

Adam sees how important that collective effort is:

“Working in the team, I’ve learned that it isn’t always as difficult as you might think to bring people together toward an outcome. You need to be able to build a team that is capable of disagreeing with each other, but will also be able to move in a singular direction.”

What skills do you need for principal engineering jobs in F1?

You need strong engineering foundations to step into a principal role, but the behavioural side matters just as much. Your ability to adapt, collaborate, motivate, and guide others is central to how you’ll make real impact

Being comfortable with change is part of life in F1. We’re building something new together, and principal engineers help lead that transformation. Adam sees openness as essential:

“One of the key skills to be successful as a principal engineer is open-mindedness. You need to push yourself to take on new experiences even if they’re uncomfortable. Those are the things that can lead to wonderful opportunities.”

The technical strengths often seen in F1 principal engineer jobs include:

  • Deep understanding of vehicle systems, materials and manufacturing
  • CAD expertise
  • Ability to make fast, informed decisions
  • Strong analytical skills and confidence in data
  • A track record of delivering complex designs or programmes under pressure

The benefits of working as a Principal Engineer at Atlassian Williams F1 Team

F1 principal engineers at Williams get to contribute in a way that’s directly linked to the performance of the car. You also become part of a team which has a critical role in our vision of winning multiple World Championships, and building long-term impact.

Adam shares why Williams is an appealing place to build a career:

“The hook for joining Williams for me, other than being an F1 fan, was seeing a job that I knew how to do but had no idea how it would be done in a Formula 1 team. I was curious how you would apply the job to the pressures and constraints of Formula 1, so that drove me to apply to join the team.”

“I loved that the people around me were very anchored and kind. They were grounded in what we were trying to achieve, and that helped to create a settled environment where you can focus on the task at hand and the context of the team.”

There is also a clear emphasis on learning and development. With new systems, tools and processes arriving across the factory, principal engineers have the opportunity to grow their own capability while helping others do the same.

“There’s great opportunities for learning and development here and over the last couple of years I feel I’ve been given a number of opportunities to increase the impact I have on the team.”
