A Formula 1 component can be beautifully made and still not be ready for the car. Before it reaches assembly, its dimensions and geometry need to match what the engineering drawing asks for. That final check is where F1 quality control jobs come in.
At Atlassian Williams F1 Team, quality inspection gives designers and manufacturers confidence that a component is fit for its next step. We spoke to Quality Control Inspector Luke Spink about the realities of the role and why F1 metrology jobs help create our winning formula.
What do F1 quality control jobs involve?
Quality inspectors verify metallic, plastic, and carbon fibre composite components to ensure they meet the required specifications. Components have to be checked before they move on, so inspectors need to understand both the engineering drawing and the manufacturing process behind the part.
That makes dimensional metrology central to the job. In Formula 1, measurement immediately serves to establish whether a component matches its intended geometry closely enough to be released.
Luke explains:
“Anything manufactured in our Machine Shop or our Composites department has to be inspected before going onto the car or into assembly. My role provides a final geometric inspection against the engineering drawings to ensure everything is within specification and safe to fit and function when it reaches the car.”
How metrology helps decide when a part is ready
Metrology, the science of measurement, is the core framework used by inspectors to ensure our parts are compliant and safe. In our quality inspector jobs, you’ll use a range of tools to build a full picture of the part. Depending on the component, quality teams can use hand tools, surface and contour equipment, scanning systems, and coordinate measuring machines (CMM). A CMM uses measured points to help inspectors compare manufactured geometry with the design intent.
At Williams, the equipment also has to match the pace and variety of working in Formula 1. It’s innovation in practice as we seek information from the part, the drawing, and the measurement data, and think flexibly about the best way to reach a reliable conclusion.
The FIA’s Formula 1 Technical Regulations set the framework teams work within, so accurate measurement matters beyond the factory too. An inspection result can determine whether a part moves forward or whether the team needs a conversation with engineering first.
Luke explains:
“We utilise 3D scanners a lot. We have a Leica tracker scanner that we use as a portable measuring tool. We take that trackside to check measurement volumes for legality, making sure the car is within spec and in line with FIA regulations so we don’t get flagged.”
The mindset behind F1 quality jobs
A sharp eye matters in F1 quality jobs, but sound judgement is just as important. Inspectors need to draw meaningful conclusions from data, communicate clearly when something doesn’t look right, and keep accurate records. That’s where accountability matters. People in quality control jobs need to own the outcome of the inspection.
The environment is dynamic, too. New parts arriving can mean priorities change, while measurement challenges can develop throughout the process. Resilience is key when the answer isn’t immediately obvious, while striving to improve and building confidence through those challenges helps the team maintain a high standard.
Luke puts the mindset clearly:
“Mindset is the biggest thing in my role. You’ll never get anywhere in a high-performance environment without a growth mindset. You have to be able to take setbacks on the chin and understand that there are always things you can learn. For anyone looking to join a high-performing team like Williams, I’d say those are some of the top skills you need.”
How F1 metrology jobs keep improving
Quality control also means improving how inspection happens. Clear procedures, consistent programming, and better information flow can make the department more effective while protecting the level of precision the car needs.
This gives people in F1 metrology jobs opportunities to make real impact beyond one component. That continuous refinement reflects the focus on excellence, while generating ideas can turn day-to-day experience into a better process for the wider team.
For Luke, being able to improve processes has been a big part of his contribution:
“Within the internal inspections department, I work on a lot of Standard Operating Procedures and documents, and I’ve helped standardise a lot of our CMM programming, which has been a big step forward for the team.”
Teamwork is equally important to the role. Quality inspection connects with designers, manufacturing teams, and the people managing component flow. Collaborating with purpose helps the right information reach the right people quickly, while clear communication matters when an inspector needs to explain a result or raise a concern.
What is it like to work in F1 quality control at Williams?
Luke joined Williams through one of our early careers programmes as an apprentice at 18, entering a factory he had previously only seen from the outside as a Formula 1 fan. Since then, the people around him have played a big part in helping him develop.
That support is part of how our teams work together. Developing self and others matters in a technical environment where decades of experience can sit alongside people taking their first steps in the industry.
Luke says:
“I like being here because of the team and the people. There are decades of experience here, so it’s nice to have people you can lean on and look to for support. It’s an open environment, very friendly, and it keeps that feeling of working within a family-run business.”
“My team leader has also been hugely influential. I met him during my interview, when he gave me a tour around the factory, and he’s been my team leader and manager ever since. I’ve been here from 18 to 23, and you grow a lot as a person in that time. He’s always been around, willing to talk and pass knowledge down, which I’m very grateful for.”
How can you get into F1 quality control jobs?
While there are several routes into this career path, Early Careers can set you on the right path. A recognised apprenticeship can give you a strong foundation for F1 quality control jobs, while relevant experience in another precision inspection environment can transfer well. Knowledge of Geometric Dimension and Tolerancing (GD&T), CMM operation or programming, and metrology software can all be useful, alongside an understanding of materials and manufacturing.
For people starting out, our apprenticeships offer a route into hands-on engineering while you learn. Luke’s own experience shows why attitude matters as much as arriving with a long list of technical knowledge.
“Completing my apprenticeship was the most memorable experience I’ve had. It was a four-year apprenticeship scheme, but I completed it in two and a half years. I worked hard to get it done and prove myself, and I was rewarded with the chance to do further education as well. I’m working towards a degree in metrology off the back of it. Getting the degree will unlock insights into metrology that I can then bring into the business.”
“If you’re looking at an apprenticeship, I’d say focus on your attitude. It’s all about learning. No one’s expecting you to come in with a decade’s worth of industry experience. They just want to know that you can absorb it all and that you’re open to learning new things.”
