Model Part Technician

Shift: 4 on, 4 off

Role Purpose: To transform wind tunnel (WT) model components from their raw, 60% rapid prototype state into precise, paint-ready parts that meet exacting aerodynamic, dimensional, and cosmetic standards.

The Model Part Technician ensures all parts meet required specifications, quality standards, and deadlines before being handed over to Model Makers for final assembly and finishing.

About the Role:

The Model Shop is responsible for building and developing the 60% scale model of our F1 car ahead of wind tunnel (WT) testing. This model must accurately represent the full-size car – even a tiny surface flaw can compromise aero data.

This role is critical in bridging the gap between Additive Manufacturing (ADM), where many components are produced, and the Model Shop, where the assembled model is prepared and tested in the wind tunnel.

Working closely with stakeholders across Aero and ADM, you will transform wind tunnel components from their raw rapid prototype state into precise, paint-ready parts. Every component must meet strict aerodynamic, dimensional, and cosmetic standards before it reaches final assembly.

By ensuring parts are accurately finished, fully traceable, and delivered on time, you directly support aerodynamic testing performance and development deadlines - work that ultimately contributes to performance on track.

Core Competencies:

Technical Skills

  • Confident using workshop tools and post-processing equipment
  • Understanding or awareness of surface preparation and finishing standards
  • Shows the potential to read and follow technical drawings and work instructions
  • Ability to connect dimensional accuracy and impact of poor finish on performance

Quality & Attention to Detail

  • ‘Right-first-time’ mindset
  • Able to spot defects, inconsistencies, or damage early
  • Takes pride in producing clean, accurate components
  • Good practical problem-solving ability

Personal Attributes

  • Able to work under pressure and to tight deadlines
  • Flexible with working hours during busy development periods
  • Self-motivated and reliable
  • Willing to learn and improve processes

Experience:

First and foremost, we're looking for someone with the right values and behaviours; a solution-oriented, 'gets stuck in' kind of mindset. The below experience is advantageous:

  • Experience in a workshop, model shop, manufacturing, or similar hands-on technical role
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Office and basic IT systems
  • Experience with MES / ERP systems
  • Understanding of F1 cost cap requirements
  • Experience in motorsport, aerospace, automotive, or precision manufacturing environments
