Finance touches every part of our journey from track to factory, and with the introduction of the cost cap, finance jobs in F1 have been more important than ever. At Atlassian Williams Racing, our finance professionals keep us competitive and compliant on and off the track.
What do F1 finance jobs involve?
The Finance team works shoulder-to-shoulder with the rest of the business to ensure we make the right investments in the right place to get the right results on track.
Our finance team is responsible for ensuring that every pound we spend drives us closer to the front of the grid. F1 finance job responsibilities include:
- Leading budgets and forecasts across the business
- Providing financial expertise for investment appraisals and business cases
- Ensuring compliance with FIA financial regulations
- Supporting departments with data analysis, insight, and clear decision making
- Managing cash flow and supplier relationships to keep operations running smoothly
Annie Lane, Finance Business Partner, explained the ins and outs of her role:
“I support the Technology and Innovation Group (TIG), helping them to make more strategic decisions, optimise the areas of cost cap, and to spend their budget in the right places. By helping the business make smarter financial decisions, we optimise spend in the areas that have the most impact on the car.”
Chris Ison, Senior Finance Business Partner, agreed:
“At its core, my job supports budget holders in making sound financial decisions which enable us to deliver our strategy of being race-winning and profitable by 2028. This has a role to play in making the car go faster. We can find cost cap optimisations within non-cost cap areas, meaning the savings can then be invested into the car.”
Skills needed for finance jobs in F1
To thrive in finance roles in F1, you need a healthy blend of technical knowledge and soft skills. Formula 1 is a high-pressure environment, and finance professionals at Williams need the confidence and adaptability to cut through the jargon and collaborate with different disciplines in plain language.
The key skills for finance jobs in F1 include:
- Financial acumen: Strong knowledge of reporting, forecasting, and analysis
- Strategic mindset: Connecting numbers to the bigger picture of racing performance
- Collaboration: Working with everyone from engineers and operations to leaders
- Communication: Making complex financial data clear and relevant
- Resilience: Thriving under pressure and adapting quickly when priorities shift
Chris says:
“Soft skills are more important than technical finance skills in this job. You have to be able to build relationships with a variety of people across the organisation. You have to also be able to translate complicated finance speak into something that means something for everybody else. Equally, you need a professional qualification too.”
Annie also highlighted the mindsight that goes a long way in the roles:
“To be successful in a finance role, you definitely need curiosity to understand the business function you’re supporting, as well as being enthusiastic about getting involved in anything you get pulled into.”
Career paths and progression in F1 finance jobs
One of the unique benefits of finance jobs in F1 is the variety and progression on offer. Roles can range from analyst positions to business partnering and leadership. And, for ambitious professionals, there are plenty of internal mobility opportunities – helping you to carve your own path in one of the most dynamic industries in the world.
Career paths in F1 finance include:
- Finance analyst: Providing insights and reporting across departments
- Finance business partner: Embedding within specific areas of the team to guide strategy
- Financial accountant: Ensuring reporting accuracy, compliance, and process improvement
- Leadership roles: Such as head of finance business partnering or CFO
Chris’s journey shows how diverse these paths can be:
“I started as a financial graduate back when I was 21 before doing various roles. When I progressed into operations, I found a love for finance business partnering as you feel like you’re right at the core of the business and making a difference. My career aspirations are to be a CFO at some point, but I’m less precious about the progression as I am to be working in sport. As long as I can keep working in sport, I’m happy, and getting to a CFO position would be a bonus.”
For Annie, internal moves have opened up new opportunities:
“I’ve had two different roles here at Williams, and my internal move to finance business partner allowed me to understand different areas of the business. I’d like to see where the Williams journey takes me from here. I’m excited to see my career grow and there’s plenty of opportunities to do so here.”
Why choose Atlassian Williams Racing for finance jobs?
This is an exciting moment for Atlassian Williams Racing. With new investment, new partners, and progress on the track, we have our sights firmly set on a bright future.
Annie has seen firsthand what this means:
“I joined Williams because of the journey. It’s really exciting to be part of the transformational aspect and to contribute to where we’re going. My first three months at Williams were exciting, overwhelming, and fun! I have such a great group of people around me across the business, and people to learn from.”
For Chris, it comes down to a great team and impactful work:
“The people make Williams a great place to work. Variety is a close second. I joined Williams because I wanted variety in a finance role. I was previously in large corporations where you almost get siloed into a specialism, whereas here I’m dealing with tons of variety.”
