A day in the life of an F1 finance analyst

An F1 car on the track

Finance roles in F1 are becoming more important every season, especially with the FIA cost cap reshaping how teams  operate. At Atlassian Williams Racing, our finance analysts give every department the insight they need to make decisions that support performance on and off the track.

Here’s a look at the role of a finance analyst and how it helps us create our winning formula.

What does an F1 finance analyst do?

Finance analysts are responsible for turning data into insights. A core part of our finance team, they prepare reporting, support forecasting, analyse spend, and help departments understand the cost implications of their decisions.

Tom Holden, Commercial Finance Analyst, describes his role:

“I work in the Finance Business Partnering team and engage with numerous stakeholders around the business. My main responsibilities involve setting the budget, carrying out variance analysis and commentary, and supporting the business to build business cases and unlock investment.”

How F1 finance analysts support performance

The finance team might sit away from the garage, but their work feeds directly into on-track performance. Financial decisions influence everything from new developments to operational activity, ensuring resources are used in a way that supports progress on track while staying compliant with FIA regulations

By providing accurate data and clear insight, F1 finance analysts help create the conditions for long-term performance. Their work supports innovation by showing where investment will have the most impact and strengthens teamwork by helping every department stay aligned with the wider plan.

A typical day of an F1 finance analyst

While the nature of the finance analyst role means no two days are the same, there are some threads that run through. As a part of the behind-the-scenes engine room that keeps the team moving, they make sense of the financial detail that sits beneath every project.

The role is deeply collaborative. Analysts meet with budget holders across the business, from marketing and HR to operations, to understand upcoming decisions, and build forecasts. They translate financial outcomes into conversations that help teams stay aligned and focused.

Project work forms a large part of the day too. Finance analysts prepare business cases for new initiatives and assist departments with investment appraisal. Every day brings new questions, challenges, and opportunities to make smarter decisions.
