What does an assembly technician do?

Assembly technicians working on a race car

In Formula 1, races are won by the tightest of margins. A car’s performance is only as strong as its components, and that’s where our assembly technicians create our winning formula. Often the unsung heroes behind the scenes, they fuel our pursuit of excellence.

If you’re looking to become an F1 assembly technician at Atlassian Williams Racing, there are many exciting routes to explore. Whether you want to specialise in car assembly, components, or electrical systems, you can unleash your potential and help to find our winning edge.

Read on to find out what an assembly technician does and hear firsthand insights from our incredible team.

What does an F1 car assembly technician do?

An F1 car assembly technician job revolves around assembling, disassembling, testing and maintaining components of the car, as well as collaborating with engineers to ensure quality. Every part they fit contributes to the speed, precision, and reliability of our race cars.

Success in a car assembly technician role comes down to a keen eye for detail and a relentless pursuit of perfection. Our technicians are problem-solvers, spotting and addressing discrepancies swiftly to make sure each part operates in tip-top condition.

Takahiro Araki described how his car assembly technician role contributes to what F1 fans see on race day.

“In my car assembly technician role, I support the race team and the factory base. We build the race car in the factory and then send it to the track. My favourite moments in the job are seeing the car cross the finish line without any troubles; that’s always a good moment!”

What does an F1 component assembly technician do?

Component assembly technicians are masters of precision. They build and maintain every part of the car to elite standards. Their work is crucial to making sure our cars have the competitive edge they need.

Responsibilities of a component assembly technician go beyond simply putting parts together, of course. These expert technicians are eagle-eyed perfectionists, spotting problems before they ever reach the track. They manage everything from operating test rigs to build records, all while keeping up with the fast-paced world of Formula 1.

Andrew Patterson, one of our component assembly technicians, summed up how this crucial part of the pit stop team plays a huge role in race day success.

“I help to get the fastest time, or the most consistent time, so after pit stop practice, we’ll study the videos to find opportunities. It’s really important to be efficient in this role, and that’s one of my key strengths.”

What skills do you need in an electrical assembly technician job?

Electrical assembly technicians are responsible for keeping our car’s advanced systems running at peak performance. Their expertise ensures flawless operation on race day.

If you have the following skills, you could be a perfect fit:

  • Knowledge and experience of using Teamcenter PLM and CAD systems
  • Familiarity with Lifing systems
  • Experience with manufacturing and ERP execution systems
  • A team player who’s ready to work as one to succeed
  • Sharp problem-solving skills
  • Ability to thrive under pressure and tight deadlines
  • Always on the lookout for ways to improve
  • A proactive attitude
