DiL Test Engineer

Ref:

R14297

  1. Technical
  2. Full time
  3. Grove, Wantage

About the role:

At Williams F1 Team, the Driver-in-the-Loop simulator is one of our most powerful tools for performance development. It's where race preparation happens, where vehicle concepts are tested, and where drivers and engineers push the boundaries of what's possible before a single wheel turns on track. As our DIL Test Engineer, you'll be helping to make all of that happen.

This is a hands-on, high-ownership role sitting at the intersection of operations and systems engineering. You'll own two core responsibilities:

Running the simulator: planning, configuring and executing every DIL session with precision, working directly alongside drivers, Race Engineering, Performance Optimisation and Vehicle Dynamics to deliver sessions that hit their objectives. You'll manage the simulator calendar, coordinate with internal teams, handle data offload and post-processing, and keep everything running to the standard the sport demands.

Keeping it at its best: maintaining the simulator to the highest levels of reliability through proactive servicing, swift fault diagnosis, and hands-on repair of mechanical and electrical systems. You'll also support the integration of new vehicle models and software updates, working with specialist engineering teams to continuously improve simulator fidelity and capability.

What you'll do:

  • Planning and executing DIL simulator sessions, configuring vehicle settings, sensor calibrations, track conditions and rFpro visual environments
  • Act as the operator during test programmes, keeping sessions on schedule and ensuring drivers and engineers get what they need
  • Implementing and owning a proactive maintenance schedule to minimise downtime
  • Carrying out hands-on mechanical and electrical repairs and troubleshooting
  • Coordinating with internal departments and external suppliers for maintenance and development support
  • Supporting integration and testing of new model developments, software updates and hardware enhancements
  • Managing the DIL calendar, balancing session bookings with maintenance requirements
  • Producing clear reports and analysis on test outcomes for stakeholders across the team

About you:

We're looking for someone who combines genuine technical depth with strong operational instincts - someone equally comfortable running a high-pressure sim session and getting hands-on with a fault diagnosis. You'll need to be organised, proactive, and the kind of person who takes real ownership of the environment they're responsible for.

  • A degree in Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience
  • Experience operating complex technical systems - simulation platforms, real-time control systems or similar
  • Practical mechanical and electrical skills, including hands-on fault-finding and repair
  • Familiarity with motion platform systems and simulation software (rFpro, Beckhoff TwinCAT or equivalent is a bonus)
  • Strong understanding of vehicle dynamics principles in a motorsport context
  • Excellent communication skills - you'll work across engineering, operations and driver-facing environments
  • Organised, solutions-focused, and calm under pressure in a fast-moving environment
