How F1 data jobs bring insights to the track

A data engineer at Williams

At Atlassian Williams Racing, big decisions start with data. Within our Technology & Innovation Group (TIG), data engineers and architects turn information into solutions that help us fine-tune performance. Their work touches every department, helping everyone from engineers to the finance team to perform at their best.

Wondering what F1 data jobs look like behind the scenes? Here’s how the team uses information to help us create the winning formula.

What do F1 data jobs involve?

Modern Formula 1 is built on information. A single lap generates a huge amount from data, from tyre pressure and brake temperature to aerodynamic load and drive input. Even beyond the track, garage, and factory, our teams rely on huge volumes of data to drive decision making in commercial, marketing, and finance.

Our data specialists help us to make sense of it all, turning raw figures into real insight.

Richard Sinclair, Data Engineering Lead, explains:

“Generally, my team is focused on making data accessible to people across the business, whether that be finance, manufacturing, or car performance. We make sure everyone has easy access to the data they need to do their jobs.”

“The role helps the car go faster in many ways. Mainly, we remove the barrier in front of people when they need to do ad-hoc analysis or they want to try out a new approach. They can get the data they need quickly, with the fewest number of hoops to jump through.”

What do F1 data engineer jobs do

Our data engineers develop and maintain the cloud-based data pipelines that allow the team to capture, store and use information efficiently.

Williams’ data engineering team use advanced tools like Apache Airflow and AWS to manage structured and unstructured data, in order to deliver solutions that make a measurable difference across our business.

Richard explained:

“I joined Williams back in 2023 as a database engineer after several years working with data in finance companies. This was something completely different. I was in that role for two years before taking on my own team to help build Williams’ next generation data platform.”

“The breadth of data we have, whether it comes from the car or finance systems, and the breadth of what we do with a relatively small group of people makes it completely unique.”

What does a data architect do in Formula 1?

F1 data architect jobs create the frameworks that connect everything, from car telemetry to factory settings. The clue’s in the name - data architects draw up blueprints for the crucial systems that keep information flowing freely and securely.

Typical F1 data architect responsibilities include:

  • Designing scalable, centralised data platforms
  • Ensuring accuracy, governance, and data quality
  • Building relationships across departments to understand needs
  • Creating systems that enable fast decision-making

Life in the data team

Working in data roles in TIG means joining a team that values collaboration. Our culture is built on teamwork and openness, where everyone’s encouraged to share ideas and get stuck into projects that make real impact.

Richard describes the culture:

“The people are exceptional. Everyone is open to explaining complex topics you might never have heard of before. They’re patient and happy to help you understand how you can help them.”

“From working on the operational side, you see the absolute best of people, especially when things aren’t going to plan. Everyone rallies around and makes time for each other. In our department, we’re open to new ideas, and it’s a really positive workplace.”

How data innovation contributes to performance

You can see the impact of F1 data roles during race weekends. The tools developed by the data specialists give engineers the ability to test ideas, monitor conditions, and adapt strategy in real time. Every improvement can shape how the car performs.

Ben Buckley, Head of Software & Data Engineering, recalls a recent example:

“We released some new tooling to the trackside engineers this year. Some of the team travelled with the race crew to see them testing it and rapidly iterated on it during test sessions. The end result was a more powerful and flexible tool for planning the race weekend.”

Growth and development opportunities

If you want to learn and grow in a data role, there is no better place than Williams.

Ben Buckley highlights how that happens:

“Williams internally offers some great personal development courses and has supported several of my group becoming people managers over the last 12 months. On the technical side, we encourage independent learning, offer opportunities to go to conferences and aim to collaborate and share knowledge as much as possible.”

Richard Sinclair added:

“It was very straightforward for me to move roles here. There’s a strong culture of internal mobility, you already have tight-knit relationships, and you know who to go to with questions. The team was hugely supportive when I decided to grow into a new part of the business.”
