Are you ready to make your mark at the forefront of Formula 1 innovation? We are looking for a Tyre Science Engineer / Tyre Modelling Engineer to join us in one of the most critical and exciting areas of motorsport and vehicle dynamics: Tyre Science.
The Tyre Science Group are responsible for analysing, understanding and quantifying tyre behaviour, by developing complex, physical models optimisation tools that can be deployed in both online and offline simulations.
Why This Role Matters:
The connection between car and track is where races are won or lost. As our Tyre Science Engineer, you'll delve into the multi-domain science of tyres, developing computationally efficient tyre models and tools that enable us to truly understand and optimise the tyres.
You’ll be critical to the identification of operational, design, and setup improvements to maximise tyre performance, and parameterising tyre models to ensure good correlation with reality.
The result? Unlocked performance secrets that make all the difference on the grid. From influencing setup and strategy to enhancing vehicle dynamics, your contributions will drive the team forward, lap by lap.
Your Mission:
- Master the margins: Lead the development and application of tyre models that give Williams Racing a competitive edge, helping us refine how our cars interact with the track.
- Collaborate across teams: Work with simulation, vehicle dynamics, and tyre performance engineers to create seamless integration between tyre behaviour and overall car performance.
- Contribute to strategy: You’ll provide critical insights into tyre science that inform setup decisions, making your work a cornerstone of on-track success and future car development.
- Push the boundaries: Investigate tyre degradation, wear, and thermal dynamics to maximise performance under ever-changing race conditions.
- Inspire innovation: Get involved and contribute to complex technical projects, and challenge your colleagues to think bigger and better, ensuring the Vehicle Dynamics department remains at the forefront of motorsport engineering.
What We’re Looking For:
- A strong academic background in Engineering, Physics, Tribology, Chemistry, or a related discipline.
- Proven expertise in simulation and tyre model development, with hands-on experience developing physics-based models.
- Ability to plan and deliver simulation capability development projects and strategies effectively.
- Advanced programming and analytical skills (ideally Python or C++).
- Exceptional ability to translate data into actionable performance insights.
Bonus points for:
- Prior experience in Formula 1 or high-performance motorsport.
- Understanding of car setup and its interplay with tyre behaviour.
- Passion for pushing the limits of what's possible in tyre science and vehicle dynamics.
- Experience with brush models or more detailed physical models, e.g. RMOD-K, FTire and Hankook!
Ready to Join the Team?
This isn’t just another engineering job—it’s a chance to innovate and shape the future of tyre science in Formula 1. If you’re ready to bring your expertise, creativity, and passion to Williams Racing, we want to hear from you.
