What to expect from a Formula 1 job interview at Atlassian Williams Racing
When preparing for a Formula 1 interview, knowing what to expect helps you perform at your best.
At Atlassian Williams Racing, our Formula 1 interview process gives you the chance to demonstrate both technical knowledge and showcase how you can thrive in fast-moving, collaborative environments.
For early careers candidates at Williams, the journey begins with an online assessment that evaluates problem-solving and reasoning. This is followed by a group interview, focussed on communication and teamwork. Those who progress are then invited to our headquarters to show how they can create our winning formula.
Top tips for F1 job interviews
Do your research
Much like the preparation our drivers go through before lights out, turning up podium-ready will help you shine on interview day.
You don’t need a lifelong passion for F1, but make sure that you understand the latest developments fueling the sport, are up-to-date with what’s new in your discipline, and know the job description inside out to answer F1 interview questions confidently.
Talk about teamwork
Every victory in Formula 1 is a team effort, and that’s why teamwork is one of our core values. During your interview, expect questions about how you communicate, collaborate, and contribute to shared goals.
Be ready to discuss experiences where you’ve worked across departments or supported others to achieve success. Brandon Grant, Engineering Acceleration Lead, discusses how teamwork runs through every department:
“Williams is a perfect example of teamwork in action. Not just the team you are sitting in, but working across teams, incorporating their skills and challenges, keeping those doors open for communication and conversation.”
Communicate clearly and stay calm under pressure
Formula 1 job interviews test how you handle pressure and communicate under time constraints.
Think about the moments when you managed multiple priorities or worked under tight deadlines. Explaining how you handled those experiences gives your interviewer confidence that you’ll perform to the standards expected in the high-intensity world of Formula 1.
Adam Devenport, Patternshop Supervisor, shared what that looks like in action:
“You need good time-management, communication is key across the business, and you have to be able to manage your own stress well, as F1 can be intense. Everyone’s working towards the same goal and wants the car to be quicker. Remember that everyone is in it together.”
Show curiosity and willingness to learn
We never stop learning. Whether you’re an engineer, analyst or technician, curiosity pushes us further up the grid every season. One of the best tips for F1 job interviews is to demonstrate your hunger to learn.
Talk openly about how you’ve developed new skills or sought feedback. This mindset shows resilience, one of the qualities we look for. When handling Formula 1 interview questions about growth or development, reflect on moments where you’ve learned from mistakes or found creative solutions.
Jacob Dale, Technical Operations Specialist, started out in our graduate scheme, and shared the importance of these values:
“An important part of being part of the graduate scheme is the ability to be open and eager to learn, taking on new challenges and not being too afraid to fail. But it definitely helps that the people here are so helpful and I have a lot of support from my colleagues.”
Ask insightful questions
An interview is also an opportunity for you to understand more about the role and the opportunities on offer. Before you arrive, think about what information you’d like to know about the role, the team, or the wider department, so you can make sure it’s the right fit for you and your skillset.
Gareth Read, Head of Methods Engineering, sees this kind of openness and curiosity as integral to success:
“As a leader, my goal is to create an environment where everyone can perform at their very best, empowering them to be their excellent selves. What drives me each day is seeing groups of talented individuals come together, solve problems, and find ways to accelerate solutions through to delivery.”
Find your place in the team
With these Formula 1 interview tips, you’ll show how you can shape our future. Every team member plays a role in our success, from our engineers and analysts to our marketing and operations professionals. By creating the winning formula, we can get our iconic team back to the top, together.
